59 manual transmission, tail housing colors

Hi all,

Can anyone tell me what the original finish was on the '59 manual transmission, tail housing and bell housing? I've reviewed the VTCI specs and have not found this info in there. From what I understand, the tranny and tail housing were left natural. I discovered the tail housing was painted red oxide on the interior. Photo of that is attached. Thanks for any info you can provide.

Alan, I did just locate a 2008 thread from you re: the bell housings being painted the same as the engine, so thank you for that.

The paint you see inside the trans case is Glyptal, still being used today. good luck, Bob C

Thanks for that info, Bob! Do you know if the same paint was used on the differential carrier housing? It's listed as red oxide in the VCTI specs, but that red Glyptal looks a lot like red oxide.

That I wouldn't want to bet on, I kind of doubt it. Glyptal is pricey, I used a quality red oxide primer then top coated with a mat clear for wheels. It still looks good after 12 years.
