63 single master to dual master cylinder conversion

Post by rjh63tbird »

I have 63 with power drum brakes and the single bowl master cylinder. I have heard of people converting to a dual master using early Mustang dual master cylinder. I have heard that 67-68 of 70 Mustang master cylinders will work.
If anyone out has done this would you please share what you used?
I did speak to CPP a while back, about a booster/master cylinder and they offered a kit but is was over $400 and had a 10 week lead time.
I am semi-retired and have a tight budget and would really prefer to use OE parts.
Please help.

Why the change to a double?
It's essentially only a criss-cross back up plan in case you tear out a brake line.

This is a really popular topic. Do a search here and the '64-'66 section so you can collect a lot of ideas. Understand some of the topics cover a conversion to dual for a disc front/drum rear set up. Those MC's are different. Good luck.

A long time ago I had a 66 Mustang coupe with a mild 302 and a T5, manual four wheel drums and a single master cylinder. I had it out for a drive and decided to pull into a friends drive, hit the brakes, blew a hose and had to put it in a ditch to avoid hitting a van. I was running about 35-40 when the hose blew.

Car wasn't to hurt but I made my mind up no more single reservoirs. I am not reckless but I do drive my cars hard so it is a safety thing.

So on the 63 the drum brakes have been rebuilt and hoses changed. I bought a new single reservoir and I have a remanufactured dual drum/drum off my 70 Mustang when I converted it to disc/drum.

I agree , I had a Falcon P.U. Years ago , had a similar experience. Anyway, after going many different routes I
Like having the factory drums on my 63 with the factory
Booster and the updated duel master cylinder. I get out and run / enjoy my car and this works well and is cost effective. Yea my 64 has been converted, have ran other
Booster set ups. I have the bones for a factory 65
Disc conversion out back. But , I like the factory drum set
Up with the updated master , and some adjuster cables thanks to Karl. People tell me my car looks great ,
But it’s not for show. It’s hit the key and go. That’s where
The fun is. Should run and drive like a 63.

No my car is supposed to be silver mink. The previous owner painted it a rose color , close to what’s on it.
I basically liked it opposed to trying to go back to mink
So we found a Dusty Rose color in base coat clear coat
That is closer to a Champaign than a pink ? . It looks like
A period correct color. But if I pulled up to another 63
With the proper Rose paint you can tell it’s not correct.
But I love it .
