Odds & Ends

Post by stevegintn »

I need your help to ID a few minor things on my 62

Photo 1 is a 'mystery' hole just left of the ignition switch - what is it?

Photo 2 shows the light under the ashtray - where does it go? (doesn't illuminate anything under there)

Photo 3 looks like a ground wire, coming off the window switch relay? - where should it attach?

1. The "mystery hole" to the left of the ignition switch is a red warning light telling you the emergency brake is on. The light will flash when the ignition switch is in the on/run position and the e-brake is set.

2. Light in the ashtray opening. Look in the "glove compartment" right behind the ash tray. Check the front edge of the plastic tray; there will be a small hole in it to allow light to enter the glove compartment from that bulb. Therefore, that bulb is mounted under the ash tray right in front of that hole. I'll try to get a picture in a little while.

3. I don't have power windows so I'm at a loss on that wayward wire. Can't help there. I'll look at my firewall though to see if such a wire is on mine.

Hope this should get you going a little bit.....

2. The light in the ash tray-- I mentioned a 'small hole' in the front edge of the glove compartment tray; that 'small hole' is actually an elongated slot and the clip on the light will snap into that slot. See photos---

In the first photo, you can see the mounting location of the light (it's in the shadow)
The second phot shows the slotted hole in the clove compartment tray.

3. My car does not have your mystery wire....can't help.

Have fun....

Thanks, Ken! - I saw the slot, just didn't think the light went there. On the E brake indicator, there's no more light (cover or fixture).

Rick, there should be? (I removed mine from the holder, and it's a basic little bulb, I have seen before)

G'day Steve.

My car is a 63 and it has power windows.
There are three wires that go to the window safety relay, I'm guessing but one would be power in, the other would be power out for the window motors and the other would be power from the ignition switch to activate the relay when the ignition switch is either in the "on" position or "acc" position. I have no ground wire on the relay and I don't think you should have a ground wire there. The ground for the rely would be via the body of the relay.

The other electrical item in that area is the fan motor for the heater box. It only has two wires to it, no ground.
On my car there is no other wires - especially a ground.
Your wire looks like a ground wire, it has no insulation.

1962 Thunderbirds have a ground wire that connects to the firewall on one end, and to a hold down bolt on the kick down bracket on the other. It appears to be that wire, which was eliminated on 1963 cars. It is clearly shown on page 8 of the Osborn 1962 Electrical Assembly Manual.

OK, to close this out - console box courtesy light properly re-installed and 'mystery' ground wire reattached properly - many thanks, Guys!
(Ebrake light will have to wait for another day)
