Rebuilding the 312 engine

Post by 57Thunderbird » Wed Oct 10, 2018 4:05 pm

A friend is currently rebuilding the 312 engine on his 57 Thunderbird. Is this engine type more prone to some particular failure, should he be paying extra attention to anything or take any precaution measures to some aspect of this engine? Thanks in advance.

I would recommend getting a rebuilding manual or some sort of Y-Block book to follow. As I see it, "If you have to ask, you need some guidance!". It is NOT a small block Chebby that so many have successfully thrown together in their garage. Best of luck.

He is getting the engine rebuilt by a professional mechanic, however these engines are quite rare in our little corner of the world

Since your in Europe , I would strongly suggest that you get a manual on the Y Block motor. You can order these books from Amazon.....

Pay special attention when installing the rear main seal. They can be a pain,if not installed correctly. They are known to leak.

See this relating to the rear seal

http://www.eatonbalancing.com/2008/09/1 ... nd-others/

There are some wrong directions in relation to the side seals for the rear main seal. The printed directions may say to insert the two metal rods on the engine block side if the side seals. This is incorrect and the rods should be inserted on the retainer side of the side seals. I believe the directions in the article says to insert the rods on the retainer side of the side seals.
