Cup holder

Post by kevindeluca66 »

So you're ready to take the Bird out for a drive and decided to take a bottle of water with you and then realize "these cars don't have a cup holder." Well, I have the answer. Simply pull out the ashtray and you are set to install.

I built this out of stainless steel to keep with the theme of the car.Acually it's made from push plates off of a commercial grade door.

Here is a spec sheet for those that may want to build their own.I do have 1 suggestion, I would use slightly thicker material for the bracket that goes into the ashtray hole as I have carried 2 20oz bottles of Gatorade and had it flex a little.

A 66 Thunderbird is cool. A Sapphire Blue 66 is a beautiful car. The 428 engine completes the package.

Funny you posted this. Took a ride with the wife and she asked where to put her drink..Nice design..Think I will copy. Does it stay in the ashtray just by friction? How long are the threaded rod connectors? Thanks..

Thanks for the compliments. The rod connectors are 1 3/4"long and accommodate a quarter twenty bolt. If you look at the lower left of the spec sheet you can see the tracing of my bracket with the tab bent upward to catch inside the console housing.

If anyone builds a lookalike post some pics of your version and any modifications that you made.

I have upgraded my design to hold my cell phone. I bent up a piece of stainless steel and attached it under the center bolt that was also an add on basically to stop the bottom of the phone from sliding out.
