77-79 Side Vent/Louver Removal?

Post by 7879Tbird »

Anyone have any insight into how to remove the side vent/louvers?

I know they are push-in and made of non-metal, so they will probably have to be pried off. The only problem is, I've never seen a set off of a bird that didn't have the post cracked off.

I have a set of moulding removal tools, but any technique tips (from the sides? Top & bottom?) or any other wisdom would be greatly appreciated.

Good question to ask before attempting to remove them. They almost always snap off when attempting to pry them off. The plastic tabs are weak in the first place.
1. Remove the plastic splash shield in wheel well: just 3 bolts.
2. With small hammer in hand, reach up through the small gap into the fender well--takes full length of your arm to reach it--locate the 4 tabs.
3. Then use the hammer to tap gently on each tab. The tapping will loosen the tabs from their anchored position.
4. Once all four tabs are loosened, you can now remove the unit from the outside. Don't lose the small plastic sockets that the tabs insert into.
5. Replace splash shield in fender well.

If you break the tabs, I have many extras. Hope that helps.
Have fun! Tim
