Sad Birds

Post by Ozzy351 »

Recently saw a couple of bullet birds (among a lot of other cars) sitting in a parts yard on Route 66 in Gallup, New Mexico looking a bit sad and sorry for themselves . The blue one still has a lot of salvagable parts but the black one is pretty well beyond it but you never know, it might just have that little elusive part someone is looking for.

It 's so sad to see a classic car to just lay there and rot from years gone by.

I live about 150 miles from Gallup. Can you give me a more exact location? I could use a number of parts from these. There are no parts cars in Albuquerque.

All I can remember is there are 2 large yards next to each other on the edge of town located on old route 66. Gallup didn't seem like a large place so they would be hard to miss as the yards are right on the roadside. Sorry I can't be more specific.

This guy has 400 Tbirds mostly 58-66, a few later models, no baby birds. Many parts in inventory. He's out in the desert by Spokane; I made a road trip and got a few parts there. I like how the square birds in the first picture look like they're flying, even dead. RIP

Thanks. I'll take a trip out there and find them. The parts were for sale correct? Sometimes you get out to these properties and the owners hang on to them as if they are going to restore them some day or "it was my dad's car, it's not for sale".

I assume the parts were for sale as most of the cars had parts missing from them and it certainly looked like a business. I think it was next door to a crash shop if that is any help. Unfortunately the place was closed due to being a holiday when we were passing and I couldn't go in to have a poke around which I would have loved to do

PS Tom,

Let me know if you make the trip, I would be interested to know how you get on with the parts etc.

Will do. It has been cold as heck here since Christmas. Coldest winter I can recall. It's even colder in Gallup. I'll wait until it warms a bit and take the trip out there. I'm not quite sure what I need, but I'll find out when I get there and see what price the guy wants for stuff.

I'd like to see that place. Looks like a lot of rust. I really like squarebirds. Maybe my next car. It has to be a convertible though.

I drove Route 66 last September and saw that yard.

Having stayed in Grants the night before we headed back to the scrap yard (Oscars Auto Salvage) to find it still closed. Ended up inside, the owners brother was there. Oscar the owner unfortunately is ill with cancer so we learnt that the cars were destined for the crusher. None of us were man enough to bring any home though.

Here's some pics - https://www.flickr.com/photos/30psi/set ... 9520201332

A few from that set:

Thanks for the info. I still might take a drive out there and see if I can get anything. It would be a shame to send them to the crusher with so many valuable body parts. I am interested in a front bumper and would like to take the rear Q's and maybe even the driver's fender. I'll see if I can get out there Saturday. I'll see if I can make a phone call first. Did you look under the hoods?

Yeah I looked under the hoods. Both empty. There may have been a transmission still.
