Serious Setback, cracked new exhaust manifold

Post by eb88 »

So this happened today, drivers side exhaust manifold:

Image

It was a brand new reproduction, made in Taiwan, just look how porous the casting is...

First and foremost, can this be replaced with the engine in the car? Or am I lifting the whole thing out.
Secondly has anyone spotted a NOS genuine ford manifold for sale anywhere?

Angry isn't even the word, and I was days away from breaking in my rebuilt engine, serious kick in the balls.

Man i can only imagine the molten lava within you. Sucks to be that close for this to happen. And that Taiwan version does look poorly made. Good luck and keep us updated.

Yes you can. Undo the motor mount bolt on that
Side and loosen the other. Take a block of wood and floor jack and tilt the motor a little.
Be sure to use a safety block between the pan in case the jack gives out.

Elliot,
Who did you buy that from? I would send them the picture and demand another one. I know that's quite a time setback, but those stupid things cost $275 which is ridiculous as I bet it is made for a few dollars (pounds). I have also have the same repro to install. I will be extra cautious.

I will look for a NOS or good used one. I was just down this path a couple of months ago since our original was cracked. I bought the repro because I could not locate the early flat flange type.

Found one for you on E Bay:

Icon,
I think that is what he has. Anything new is from Asia. NOS is nearly impossible to find and good used are difficult as well for the pre 63 style manifold. I have one from Asia out in my garage right now, and you can tell the casting quality is sub-par compared to an original.

NOS manifolds are rare, but they are out there. I found a set for my '64 on eBay several years ago, I believe the seller's handle was Galaxie Performance or something similar.

I believe Elliot's car is a '63 so he needs the donut flange style manifolds.

If that's the case, then there are plenty of C3 castings to choose from on Ebay. The 61-62 are much more difficult. The trouble with Ebay is how carefully has the seller looked them over for cracks. They can be unscrupulous.

Thanks for all the response here guys. I bought the repro pair a couple years ago so no chance of refund now..
My '63 should use the donut flange yes but here in the UK the flat flange exhausts are pretty much the only option, so I went with this:

http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.vi ... 1522878486

Good price vs. a horrificly made repro, not sure why I didn't do this in the first place.
Good to know this can be done engine in the car, another thing in my way is the lock tabs that went over the bolts, I can't for the life of me remove them, this has turned out to be a real nightmare.

Elliot looks like you made a purchase from our very own Richard Johnson (AKA Fuz) who is a regular on the Forum....win-win!

I did not know he was a forum member! That is a bonus, he's being very helpful regarding shipping options.

I was wondering about installing those or not. They look cool and add to originality, but this is the consequence.

Elliot,
How about pulling the head, a/c bracket and exhaust manifold off as one piece? You'll have to pull the a/c compressor off, a project in itself, then undo the one bracket bolt in the front. You could then just loosen the intake, loosen the rocker arm enough to get the pushrods out of the way and then take out the head bolts. Oh yea, and the oil dipstick tube bolt would have to be removed from the a/c bracket. Anyway you go, I feel your pain.

I recommend the lock tabs. Before my engine was rebuilt I had bolts that would work loose (I realize many here would like to have had that problem with exhaust manifold bolts)! During the rebuild I had the manifolds surfaced flat, coated the metal heat shields with anti-sieze (no gaskets), and torqued the bolts to the specs in several steps. I bent the tabs on the locks only after a couple of full warms up and re-torqued after cooling down. No problems, leaks or loose bolts in several years.
PLEASE invest a few bucks and buy all the shop manuals for your car. Definitely will save you much time and be an education.
