1958 rear spring isolators

Post by Grant Rodgers »

On my 1958 tbird with coil springs on the rear. I need the insulator that goes on top of the spring, can’t find any, can anyone help with what might work. I have a scraping type noise coming from that area, thinking the isolators are wore out, but don’t want to take down until I find some replacements.?

Coil Springs on the rear? Are you referring to helper springs on the shock absorber? Rear suspension is mounted using leaf springs. Maybe your rear shocks are bad and that's the noise you are hearing. Is the sound happening when tha car is rising and dropping (over bumps) while driving?

Fordrodsteve; Steve the 58 Bird used coil springs on the rear, providing the car with independent suspension on all four corners.

Grant I cannot profess to knowing the 58 but with independent rear suspension you may have a swing arm bushing that is drying out giving a squeak or groaning noise. Just a thought. Your idea of the spring silencer is valid too. Little things like your problem are interesting to find out what is really happening. Good luck on your problem solve.

I apologize. If the OP goes to the bird nest. (tbirdparts.com) they list the insulators in their catalog on page 65. P/N CS58REAR at $12.95 per pair. I'll butt out now. I'm obviously much more familiar with 55 to 57 birds.

Steve these Birds we own have many little things we can not know all about. We all make mistakes.
I prefer that it is better to state a thought and provide help and possibly be wrong and be corrected than not say a thing and not help at all.
