Unholy Exhaust Manifold

Post by hollywoodtbird »

Hi Forum,

I have a 64. I'm having a terrible time getting the top bolts loosened on the exhaust manifold. My main issue is clearance from the wall of the engine compartment. Specifically, the top bolts in front. I'm looking for any advice I can get. I need to fix an exhaust leak.

Thanks!

The driver side is particularly difficult but when I did mine I undid the motor mounts, jacked the engine up a couple inches and wedged it away from the inner fender with a piece of wood. I've done it twice now and since I never wanted to do it again I fitted copper gaskets - this was about 15 years ago and never had any problem since.

I'd agree with Dave's suggestion. A bit of work that way to save yourself next to impossible effort otherwise. Alternatively, lift with an engine hoist, if available, and support sides and from below to save from potential jack damage to the oil pan.
