1966 Convertible upgrade
Has anyone put a Ford Coyote motor in a 1966 Convertible Thunderbird? I’m looking at upgrading my tbird with a coyote motor and automatic transmission. Just wondering if anyone has done this yet and would h ave any advice. Thanks

If you look a little further down the topics here, you'll see hitman's project "64 Tbird big project- 4.6L mod motor, 5spd manual, IRS" Over on the 61-63 modified forum, dusty has a similar thread for his car, "labor of love."
They are both doing more than an engine swap, so the projects are more complex than what you're envisioning.

The coyote motor is a direct descendant of the 4.6/5.4 Mod motor, so many of the modifications you see in the 4.6 thread will apply.
I think integrating the Crown Vic / Gr Marquis front axle/cross member is a good idea for the swap. This will provide rack & pinion steering and move the steering gear out of the way of the wider motor. Shock tower modifications will be needed to fit the big DOHC heads. The excellent manners of the coyote and wide power band is made possible by twin variable cam timing (Ti-VCT) This is how you get so much power out of only 5 liters. So you need to keep the Ford computer control to operate the cam phasing.
Coyote motors don't come with P/S pumps, so you need to figure out a new front belt drive configuration.
