1966 Engine Block Numbers for a 428

Post by Craneman16 »

I have a 66 T'Bird with a "428" "Q" Code engine (w/AC) and just pulled the engine to have it rebuilt. On the top side of the block are stamped the numbers "6D27". Does anyone know what those numbers mean? Also do they stamp the Vin number on the block? My vin is 6Y85Q160654.

I assume you found the casting date which is cast into the top of the intake manifold, which translates to April 27, 1966. VINs weren't stamped into blocks until 1968 production. An assembly date code is stamped into a boss cast in the cylinder block toward the driver's front corner, below the cylinder head. A casting date for the block can be found on the bottom of the block near the oil filter adapter.

Casting and assembly date information can be found in VTCI's 1964-1966 Original Factory Specifications Manual, which VTCI members can purchase through the VTCI Country Store (click on the VTCI logo at the upper left corner of the page to go to VTCI's home page and find the pull-down menu for Buy Concours Rules. This is a must-have book for those restoring a '64-'66 T-bird and looking for information on authenticity, detailing and identification for restoration purposes.

Seeing that this is your first post, you will be able to find a lot of information here, especially if you use the "Search" function at the upper right corner of the screen and type in keywords related to your search.

Welcome to the forum! Sounds like you're starting a serious restoration project. How about a photo of the car?

This from my years of playing with 65-66 Mustangs. Ford stamped an assembly date on the head surface (generally on the left side in front of the head). These can be lost if the block gets decked. This is probably your 6027 number. Casting dates and part numbers are actually raised and cast in when the engine block is poured. Some (all?) of the 428 blocks have "428" cast in and can only be seen with one of the freeze plugs removed. Ford HiPo engines had the car serial number stamped just above the oil pan on the lower right front corner. I don't know if they did this for other car lines.
