Site Upgrade, Attachments, & Photobucket
Site Upgrade, Attachments, & Photobucket
We have several site changes in the works that we wanted to share.
First, we've significantly upgraded our site hosting package, which will should make the site faster and allows us to host user images. Unfortunately, as part of this upgrade, our hosting company moved us to a new server without telling us. As a result, the sites (main site and forums) went offline yesterday (July 31st) evening. For most users, everything should be back up and working normally now. Sometimes it takes a while for a new address to propagate across the Internet so there could be some more hiccups over the next day or so.
.
Second, we've enabled the ability to attach photos to your forum posts. This means you don't have to use Postimage or Photobucket anymore. As you're composing or replying to a post there should now be an "Attachments" tab at the bottom. Each post is limited to 20 attachments and attachments may not be larger than 4MB.
Finally, we're aware of the new "paywall" that Photobucket has created trying to get users to pay a significant annual fee for 3rd party image hosting. We're in the process of replicating those images on VTCI. This is a multi-step process and it may be some time before we're able to modify all of the historical posts (over 6000) to point to VTCI, but we are working on it. Note that if you've used Photobucket in the past, you should be able to access and download all of the images you have posted directly from your account. It's the links on other sites (e.g., VTCI) that are gradually "breaking." Eventually we may work to copy all externally hosted images to VTCI so that our links/images don't break with the passage of time.

Forgot to mention that I've requested an updated SSL certificate so hopefully that will be in place soon for those of you using https.

This is awesome--thanks for the hard work. Definitely above and beyond working to archive the images from photobucket!
Amazing!

You're welcome. Glad I can help.
I think the photos are safe now, but fixing the links poses a few challenges. Everyone's patience is appreciated while I mull over some options.

Re: Site Upgrade, Attachments, & Photobucket
G'day Brian.
I would like to thank you as well for all the work that you have done.
I am looking forward to using the direct method of posting images.
I can access the forum on my phone but my computer is still no go.
I have purchased a new P.C. with windows 10, not because of the forum but this is long overdue.
Maybe because of the SSL is why I can't access the forum. I can accsss the VTCI home page though.
Once again thanks for all the work
Karl

Re: Site Upgrade, Attachments, & Photobucket
Brian - well done. There's a lot of behind-the-scenes work going on here on Brian's behalf that should make for a more-interesting and informative Forum. The photo attachment function will be very helpful for replying to questions or demonstrating a point, especially since I can now go out to my workshop or into my library, snap a photo on my phone, upload it virtually immediately (come to think of it that can be a bad thing, too) and we can retain it for future use in the Scoop or here. Now if I can just get time to learn Photoshop and related programs...

This is a test (wanting to see if an attached image file appears DIRECTLY in the post (as with HREF image tag)?

Re: Site Upgrade, Attachments, & Photobucket
Glad it's well received. I will eventually fix most of the legacy PhotoBucket links in the old posts, but it's going to take some focused programming and I haven't had time to mess with it.
