Brake linings.

Post by Karl »

I am toying with the idea of when the time comes to replace the brake shoe linings on my 63 Bird that I would rivet the linings onto the metal shoe like the original.
Has anybody tried this and does anybody know the size of the brass rivets and where I could obtain some from?
Many thanks,
Karl.

If you haven't bought them already, you can buy them riveted:

Bonded works fine for me, every now and then you get a real treat on eBay and some proper asbestos shoes show up:

Hello eb88,

I just installed a pair of front original asbestos shoes. I picked them up last year in a garage sale with a set of 62 wheel skirts. The box and shoes are from 1972. I installed them inside a new set of freshly turned drums. I think I held my breath for the whole installation  After a brake bleed marathon I going for a test drive.

Thanks ebb88.
I have 4 spare sets for the front, one which is N.O.S.
We used to do our own shoes years ago and it was just an alternative to sending the shoes away. I live in Brisbane and it seems that I will have to send shoes to Western Australia (3000 klm away) or Sydney (1000 KLM away). Then there is the fear that I will not receive my shoes back.
From what I can work out there are two types of shoes, both very similar but the correct shoe for a 63 Thunderbird is just a tad longer at the bottom.
