Convertible & hardtop windshield interchange?

Post by jhenry »

Quick question: Are the windshields in the hardtop and convertible the same? I am looking at a '61 parts car to aid in my '62 convertible resto. What about door glass and vent windows? Thanks!

Simple answer: Yes. Just be aware that glass is date-coded and that side window glass may have different manufacturer markings (FoMoCo for '61, PPG for '62-'63): if someone out there is looking for correct '61 glass you might want to try trading.

Thanks Alan. I am mostly concerned about the windshield that has a couple of nasty chips. It's a shame because there are some cool "Ducks Unlimited" and golf course membership stickers dating back to 1964 on the old windshield!

I saw an ad on the TV in the UK about a product called Autoglass which appears to be a clear gel type liquid which diminishes minor chips in the windshield. They work by coming to you or you taking the car to them for the work. Unfortunately there is no DIY kit available from what I have seen.

Has anyone heard about such a product?

I had a chip in my Mustang windshield "repaired" by a local glass shop using a similar product and was less than satisfied. The damage is still evident but less noticeable. As a result the shop did not charge me for the service.

I had a couple of pits in a windshield "reparied" with that stuff years ago. It was less than ideal, but did make them less noticeable.

...I think I would rather have *somewhat* repaired pits PLUS the Ducks Unlimited and golf club stickers from the early 60's than a new windshield. Windshields aren't much of a conversation piece, usually.
