It's not a Sports Roadster. Somebody added the tonneau cover to a convertible...and apparently also removed the rear fender badges. And that's the first time I've seen raised white letter tires on one of these.

First time I've seen one with the body side molding like that. Is that an aftermaket thing?

Jay, I noticed that you have listed a 2103 Mustang Boss 302 (SBY) ...do you mean 2013?

Stainless steel body side molding (Sports Side Trim) was a new $34.80 dealer installed option in 1962, although these aren't correct (big surprise) because the three rear chrome chevrons are missing and original side moldings spanned the gaps between each chevron with small individual pieces of trim.

Hmm...ok, I guess I need to get my trim fixed. Don't have the pieces between the gaps...

Jim, I don't know if this happened only in early builds or on dealer installs but I believe some cars have been documented as missing the short trim pieces between the chevrons. Maybe Alan can confirm?

BTW Jim whose car is pictured in your post above; it looks superb! Was the picture taken in Arizona?

My barn find '62 did not have the pieces between the chevrons either. I've also noticed quite a few other cars that are missing them. I have already obtained the missing pieces so the installation will be correct when the car is restored.

Although it isn't correct, perhaps some of these pieces were not installed as they should have been at the dealer level? Maybe because it can be difficult to secure the trim on the convertibles as the top pump hinders access to the mounting nuts.

Since it was a dealer add, I'd bet not every dealer did it the same. I think I like the look better with the extra pieces added, though...

Here's mine (in Arizona).

Bill...

Thanks for catching that! Actually, I do not have the 2103 Boss, though I suppose it would do at least Warp 2 and 0-60 in Two Weeks Ago.

trim parts

Postby richs redbird » Sat Jan 04, 2014 7:52 pm

My original Ohio/ Mich M code HT had the little trim pieces installed at the dealer in Toledo and it would not be complete with out them. Guess some dealers or the installers got lazy or had apprehension about drilling holes in a high dollar Thunderbird. You never know. More Finished. If in Toledo Spain or Toledo Ohio & London, Ohio They look better with them

That's right, Gary. That SR was sold at Barrett Jackson/Scottsdale a couple years ago. Looks good in the photo, but I would judge it as a #3 car. Ironically both that car and Jay's very sharp looking '62 are the same red/black color combo as the '62 SR project car that I just picked up in Ontario. And Elliot's beautiful black/red SR is the same combo as my '63 convertible project. Really makes me want to get started on both of them, but will have to wait until the '66 leaves for good, the end of February.

The small pieces of side trim where supposed to be installed between the rear quarter ornaments on the 62 cars most sport side trim was installed by dealers and they took short cuts and did not install the 6 shot pieces.

I have seen a few 61's that had the sport side trim installed on them likely by dealers on some the long rear quarter piece was left off because it would interfere with the 3 spear ornaments that the 61 had on the quarter, on one the trim piece had been cut down in length so it did not reach as far as the spears.

Got that one screwed up guy's what had been done is that they had put the short pieces on spaced out to fill in the area to the spears.
