Steering Extreme (lock) Position Noise

Post by PatchesPal »

Hello folks,

I'm getting a disturbing clunking noise involving the steering on my '61 convertible. The alignment seems correct, and the steering seems tight. Also, when the car is stationary and I go "lock-to-lock", I just get the typical noise from the power steering pump at the travel stop...
The problem is when I approach the same extreme (lock) position while the car is in motion, for instance, when executing a U-turn: There's a clunking noise from the steering mechanism. Upon inspection, the only component that shows evidence of contact is a bracket, oriented vertically, welded to the lower control arm; is this another travel stop? Does this clunking noise at the extreme wheel travel sound normal?

-Thanks!
