Restoring interior textured metal?

Post by JPierson »

We had an unplanned surprise with the interior metal on my 64 - The original looked like it had hide texture pressed into it, but when the shop stripped the surface rusted metal down to bare, the texture went with it. I thought pressing vinyl facing into a wet skim coat of filler could replicate it, but does anyone know how/if that texture can be recreated?

I think the texture was achieved by bonding the textured vinyl to the metal, kind of like how people wrap cars these days, but with texture.

Textured vinyl is out there but don't know if anything offered now a days will last 60 years like the original. My 61 rear seat trim panels are rusty on the back side and I would like to get them stripped but I know the textured material will be gone.
Keep posting on what your solution is.

When I stripped my seat backs I distinctly remember that the texture was stamped into the metal. After chemically stripping and using scotchbrite the texture was still there on the bare metal.

If it is gone it is because the shop sanded it off. It would honestly probably be easiest to find new seatbacks and refinish them.
