Can Mercon V be used for the convertible hydraulic pump.

Post by johneich »

My manual says to use type A but I can not find any, a Mercon chart says V is compatible with A, A search of this forum found nothing on the subject, thoughts?

My system is filled with Dextron, and it runs fine, a little slow when it is very cold. When I changed it over, it was completely purged, new pump, new hoses, and empty cylinders. As long as Mercron V and whatever is in there don't have a reaction (doubtful) it should be fine.

You probably won't find type A but you can find type F, which is what you want to use unless you know the trans has been overhauled. If the clutches have been replaced Dexron is fine, but type F won't hurt them either. JMO, Bob C

I have changed this to another question in "I need to add hydro fluid to my 1965 convertible top"

Not a power steering pump, not transmission fluid, convertible top fluid, 1965. I am looking for
compatibilities.

Transmission fluid is a hydraulic fluid, so is brake fluid. For "customer and dealer satisfaction" Ford decided to use trans fluid rather than having folks stock yet one more specialized item. Brake fluid wasn't really practical so the trans. fluid was specified. In this application using types A, F or Mercon makes no difference. The differences in the types strictly benefits transmission operation and has no different effect on the operation of the top pump as it was the viscosity they were designing around. IMO
