AOD into a 1966 Tbird

Post by TBirdMan951 »

Has anybody installed a AOD overdrive trans into a 1966 Tbird ? The car is a 390 but we are building a 428 for it. Is there a particular vintage and application trans I should look for ? Does the AOD bolt up to the FE or do I need an adapter kit ?
I am building a 4:11 rear end which will be a 2:88 in OD.
Thanks for the help !

I think you'll need an adapter kit. There are a few around now and I would look for a AODE or 4R70W transmission. Post some pics if you do anything so we all know how it's done. Me personally will eventually be going with a 4L60 or the 6l80 as the other Ford transmissions didn't really make it to our shores.

Thanks for the info. I want a ford trans in my Ford. I am still doing research on gear ratios, stall speeds, etc.
I will post info as I proceed.

I would imagine you would need to up the rear gear to 3.7 or more. Most of the adapters are made for the US Ford bellhousing patterns like the 2010 6R80 F250 2wd or the AODE, 4R70W from a 90's Tbird or Lincoln (I think). You can pick them up for around $500 at wreckers. There are 6R80's in this country (Aust) but the bell is for a diesel and it's different.

Unfortunately, there were only 3 speed transmissions by until after they discontinued the FE. I agree with Stubbie on the 4R70W or AODE. There is a company that modifies a 4R70W to direct fit an FE. I was considering this but it's very cost prohibitive, comes with the powertrain computer. I ended up with a modified C6 with a four pinion planetary gear with lower first and second but leaves the final drive. There are also conversion plates with the entire kit to mount an AOD, AODE or 4r70W for about a thousand bucks. The C6 that you have in there also has an overdrive unit available for it. But if you get rid of the C6, sell me the shift linkage for a 65 that I converted from COM to C6.
