64 carb issue

Post by johnson4prez »

Okay, on to the next thing. The engine cuts off continually. I thought maybe fuel wasn’t getting through to the engine. Complete opposite is happening I took off the air filter, the carb is shooting fuel out. I took some screenshots of the video I took. So I suppose the engine is being flooded and isn’t getting a proper balance of fuel and air. What should I do? Is the carb bad?

Not necessarily a "bad" carburetor. Could be a bad needle or seat for the float. Or it could be a stuck float. I would check that first. If you find a worn or bad needle for the float you can buy what is called a "tuneup" kit for the carb and it should have a new needle in it.

Yes and if it is a stuck needle valve, once you get it sorted you may want to add an inline fuel filter to help to prevent a recurrence.

How do I approach this? With my very basic mechanic skills is this something I should attempt? Do I need to remove the carburetor? Is there a video from start to finish that anyone would recommend? Thank you

Try googling the make and model # of the carb, usually there are how to videos on YouTube and info you can access on the web. A rebuild kit will come with instructions or at least an exploded diagram showing where the parts are.

The rebuild kit will be cheap compared to a new carb.

Alright, I took the top off, and here is what I found:

The back float was under a large pool of fuel. I took off the float and pin. I think the needle needs to be replaced. Anyone know how to get this out? I’ll look it up, just wondering if anyone has any suggestions.

Also I posted additional pics and of anyone sees anything that I may be overlooking please share.

Thank you everyone for your help.

You found your problem - that's great! So it's not the needle and seat, it's a bad float.

I once had a float drown in a parking lot - I think I was about 17. I didn't know what was wrong (wouldn't start) so I just kept cranking until it hydrolocked. Took off the air cleaner and the carb was full to the brim with gas.
After getting a replacement carb, I pulled the spark plugs and cranked the eng. Gas flew out like 8 little fire hoses. We left two huge wet area's on either side of the car. It was everywhere!
I'm amazed we didn't incinerate ourselves.

Got the rear float ordered. Thanks for the help!

Scott, that's a funny story. I'm glad you're able to share that experience, and we can figure this out. It's nice outside, and am ready to drive this around.

Hi there. If the flooding had been going on for awhile, you may have gas in the crankcase oil. Suggest you check and replace the oil if needed.

64ZCODE, thanks for your help.

As far as the carb make and model, all I could find on the carb was a tag that read: FOMOCO C4SF B, A 3GC.

I would recommend also getting the "carburetor tune up kit". It will have new needles and gaskets to replace for the things that you disassembled. especially if the old gaskets are dried out or deformed at all. New gaskets will seal better.

It's possible you've got your original carb, which is pretty amazing.

That’s an Autolite, right? Unless you’re a purist, why not upgrade to a 670 cfm Holley or Edelbrock?
