Boxing Day Build

Post by XMas 64 »

My 1964 Whimbledon White Thunderbird Coupe has a plate indicating it was built on Saturday December 26th 1964. This seems a bit odd, but I suppose if you're trying to win a sales volume competition that there were lots of people working right up to the end of the year!

Does anyone understand the pattern of when these cars were built? Were the facilities 7 day a week?

The thing that I find that is odd is that you have a 1964 MY Thunderbird that was built on December 26th 1964, when production of 64's started on August 12th 1963 and ended July 24th 1964.

My 1965 MY was built December 1st i964, first day of production for MY 65 was August 3 1964. Yes they did produce cars 7 days per week and sometimes 24 hours a day with very few actual Holidays off during the production run.

I worked in the auto industry. Often schedules ran 24-7 with additional man hours provided by overlapping shifts with overtime if needed. In 31 years I had to work 1 Christmas Day but several Easter Sundays and Thanksgiving Days. We usually worked the "summer shutdown" weeks around July 4th as well to catch up with the assembly plants as well as gearing up to change over for the new model builds. The logistics of everything is amazing.
PLEASE invest a few bucks and buy all the shop manuals for your car. Definitely will save you much time and be an education.

Indeed...manufactured in 1963. Sounds like the norm really...
