Body work

Post by GRNTHNDR »

I’m new to this site. I just bought a decent 66. Restored over 20 years ago holding up nice overall. Lower right fender is pushed in a few inches in front of front wheel. The tire rubs when turning. There aren’t any creases on the bend so if anyone has suggestions how it can be pulled where it needs to be, I thank you.

welcome to the forum. I moved your post to the appropriate section, the tech section is for tech articles that describe repair procedures, not general questions. good luck, Bob C

Welcome to the forum and congrats on the new '66.

If you've got a photo of the car, we'd all love to have a look. A photo of the damaged area will help get the right advice.

I'm all for a do-it-yourself approach and I've tackled many projects that pushed my skill set, but visible body and paintwork always scares me a bit. I'm sure you'll get useful advice from some members with body experience here.

As for my approach, a trip to a trusted body shop isn't a bad idea. Even if you don't use their services, most will be happy to tell you how they would approach the problem and give you some ideas on how to fix it yourself.

Last idea: I've found the folks over at AutoBody101 pretty helpful: https://www.autobody101.com/forums/

Good luck!

That’s a great color you don’t always see. Also, it’s great to see an engine bay looking practically original.

A few more pics. I saved the pics from the Craigslist ad. The car was from North Carolina, went to Los Angeles area along with 10 other cars, from a collector to sell in California. I paid for inspection. I’m in Michigan near Ann Arbor. Airfare was high during holidays. So I took the gamble. I then had it shipped home.

So many of these Birds have bowed up front bumper, I can’t find a pic with a straight bumper. The bowed area I’m referring is under the grill/bird. Anyone know a good way to straighten?

I know what you mean, but is the bumper really "bowed up" or the entire bumper tilted up? Could you post a picture from the side of the car? Using a bumper jack over the years would not push the center up, but could tilt the entire bumper.
PLEASE invest a few bucks and buy all the shop manuals for your car. Definitely will save you much time and be an education.

Appears to be in very good shape--even the dash is uncracked. Good exterior/interior color combination.

I can see what you mean about the bumper in your pic. I know that on the 64's you can hardly find a bumper that isn't srpung a bit from using the jack on it. You could be finding the same thing.

I would remove the lower valance corner section and see if there is any adjustability in the mounting brackets. That corner section is seperate from the actual fender. How far off from the drivers side is it?
Have had over 40 t birds here from 57-2004

Thanks for that advise. I will try. As far as the drivers side goes, I think it’s good.
