Power window stalls on passenger side in going up.

Post by J.W. SEALE »

I have a 1966 Landau which I’ve had for 3 years and just getting around to looking at smaller items like power windows that need repair. The passenger window stalls after starting up about 2 inches. I can pull the window up manually after holding the switch in. The driver window goes full up but slow. Both go down fast. Question: Is this a motor problem or linkage problem or what should I look for first? Thanks.

Sounds a lot like the assist spring was installed backwards inside your regulator in both windows during a prior repair. That's easy to do (possibly broken/missing). If you're handy and have the '66 manual, it's the first thing I'd check.

Thanks paulr,
Is there a separate manual for the doors/windows showing more regulator/motor installation as my 66 shop manual only gives cursory non illustrated info? Also I see no easy way to get inside the door to do anything. Am I missing something here? Thanks

Right. The manual leaves a lot to intuition. The '66 Osborn electric manual (Bird Nest sells them, $25 last I remember) has schematics and assembly diagrams for the doors, regulators, etc. as well as the rest of the car. Combined with the manual and your noggin, you can get there. The door panel removal is the delicate procedure (Osborn helpful with this, too), especially the driver's door with the remote mirror. We've all been initiated in this. After trial and error, it's not so terrible. The hardware technology of the day was wood screws. :!exclaim:

You have a TL--extremely large windows. Those regulators could use a full cleaning, re-lubing, the works. 52 years of neglect. It's a project, but the billable hours a specialist might rack up could give you a migraine. I'd approach it as a labor of love. Good luck.
