1964 convertible top problems.. surprise!
Just purchased a beautiful red/red interior 1964 convertible and top and everything was working great at the end of last season. This spring when flipped top switch, nothing at all. So printed off the trouble shooting 23page book . So was an issue with neutral safety switch, got power back there and could hear motor trying to work but rear lid not opening. Unbolted lid and evenly and gently got lid open after pulling pins off rear hydraulic cylinders. Hooked pins back in and everything seemed to work properly until i brought lid almost all the way back down( maybe a gap of 1 inch left) then when tried to open lid back up, motor was powering out because the small upper back panel lid kept trying to open up when the main lid had not even started to open. so was able to unplug motor for the small flip lid and trunk lid opened right up. So then printed off article on how to adjust the upper back panel round limit switch ( by Certified Rebuilders.com). performed the adjustments on the flip lid switch and then hooked motor plug back up and had same result of the flip lid wanting to open up before trunk lid was all the way open. I do not have a service manual, but was wondering there must be some other switch that is telling the flip lid to open way to early and it is preventing the trunk lid from opening. When you are lowering the trunk lid back down, the flip lid motor is sucking the lid tight against the rubber stops under the trunk lid. Help... please.. any ideas would be great. Thank you.

Check the switches that close when the deck lid is all the way open. These are located by the hydraulic cylinders that lift the deck lid. There are two of them.

When trying to retract/lower the top, the left side deck open limit switch (by the left hydraulic cylinder) is supposed to stop power to the lid opening cylinder pump when the lid is fully open and then pass power to the raise upper panel motor. If this limit switch is “way” out of adjustment, I suppose it is possible for the power to open the lid is stopped long before it is fully open, and power applied to the motor to open the panel. Other than really bad switch adjustment, I don’t see any other thing except a short between the open the deck lid and the raise panel wiring and/or the limit switch connectors.
But I think a short anywhere between these two circuits would simultaneously power both the lid open pump AND the raise panel motor. That is, unless you see both working at the same time, it’s unlikely the problem is a short.
So as noted in the above post by jt---, I’d focus on the lid open limit switches, especially the one near the driver’s side lid hydraulic cylinder. The switches' control arms are moved by the hydraulic cylinders' movement.
