Post by rrbnut »

the white color on the speedometer numbers have faded quite a bit;like to redo them; as they are lit from behind, anyone know what color and color code to use on those?
Any help is appreciated.

I painted mine by hand with a small, model car type paintbrush with Testor's silver.
Works for me.
Good Luck!

A silver paint pen is much easier and less messy. I did mine in about 15 minutes witha paint pen.
A 66 Thunderbird is cool. A Sapphire Blue 66 is a beautiful car. The 428 engine completes the package.

Somebody on this forum (I think) had great success with silver spray paint. They sprayed the paint on a surface, and then used a rubber pad, like a stamp. You put the rubber pad into the sticky paint, and then stamp the silver over the numbers. I'm sure a bit of practice, and fine-tuning the technique would be necessary, prior to the actual application. My numbers are in great shape, but if they ever need some touching up, this is the method i'm going to use.

When I bought my 66, the previous owner had painted over the numbers.
It was one hell of a tedious job making them look like they are supposed to, but like always, the end result is what counts.
Once all the red over the numbers was removed, I used a white paint pen for the numbers.

I believe the numbers were originally chrome colored. I used a silver paint pen from a hobby store to restore mine. It takes a steady hand and a nice, clean tip on the pen, but the results I got were pretty good. This is a task more easily done with the cluster out of the car, btw.
