Header to Exhaust Connection
OK, guys - while I had my '62 on the rack at the transmission shop for service, the owner pointed out that on the passenger side of the exhaust, the header to exhaust connection makes nearly a 90 degree DOWNTURN. He said that the flow is restricted, and will eventually cause problems (burnt valve, etc.).
This was done last spring by my engine rebuilder, who sent my car (without my permission) out to a local muffler shop, because (he said) they could not make the connection. I had them install new Sanderson 'shorty' headers, on the 390.
Here's what it looks like, from directly below:
So I took it to MY local muffler shop, but they said there was no fix. I ended up having them install a whole new dual exhaust (with MagnaFlows). The new pipes are 2 1/4 inch diameter, versus the old 2 inch, so that should help with flow.
Should I be concerned? - has anyone else faced this issue? - if so, is there a fix?

Re: Header to Exhaust Connection
Sorry, ICON - but not unless I jack it up and crawl under it? (and I try not to do that lol!)
The problem is the pipe drops down off the header, almost at a 90 degree angle, and there's really no room to do anything else?

Re: Header to Exhaust Connection
If you look at this link below you will see in the pics that the Sanderson headers on the passenger side run almost into the firewall so I guess you would have to have a 90 degree bend there to get past.

HI,
yes, that is my car in the images (photobucket still works!) and the pipe comes out at 90 degrees, my exhaust man was surprised but thought there would be no issues.

Re: Header to Exhaust Connection
Actually Brian (Yoda) found a way to save those old images from photobucket (it was gone). Before the announcement that we could post pictures directly, Brian was working behind the scene saving all our pics and doing testing on posting pics. Thanks again Brian(photobucket still works!)

Re: Header to Exhaust Connection
Graeme why do those headers come straight out like that? Is it to do with the steering arms below or something else?
Re: Header to Exhaust Connection
Hi Stubbie,
not sure why but can come up with 2 reasons:
1. packaging - they can be shipped in a small box that does not cost the earth to send compared to the FPA holy grail headers
2. build cost - not much tube in these headers so quick to make and lower cost.
Any other thoughts out there?

Re: Header to Exhaust Connection
Stubbie, I left out one little detail on my new exhaust installation.
When I went to get my car, the shop manager drove her off the lift (in reverse) into the parking lot. But when he tried to put it in drive, the selector would not move any further. The mechanic was befuddled, and as it was closing time, he simply unbolted that side of the exhaust (driver side) from the header, so they could get the car back in the shop til the next day.
The problem was, he ran the new exhaust too high (close to engine), and it interfered with the transmission shift rod full operation.
The fix was to move it down a little.

Re: Header to Exhaust Connection
Hi, it's hard to tell from your pics and the discussion, but is there an exhaust gas control valve on the header that the exhaust pipe then attaches to? If not, that could explain the severe lack space in there, putting it in the way of the transmission controls.
just a thought....

Thanks, Geoff - but I don't think my Sanderson 'shorty' headers had the control valve?GeoffInCarlsbad wrote: ↑Fri Aug 25, 2017 4:42 pm Hi, it's hard to tell from your pics and the discussion, but is there an exhaust gas control valve on the header that the exhaust pipe then attaches to?
