Dipstick Conundrum

Post by stevegintn »

Well, one of the many small things that I need to take care of on my '62, that I thought would be simple?

My heavy-handed son leaned on the dipstick handle and snapped it off. So I thought, nothing but a little money wouldn't fix?

To my dismay, the replacement I got from Mac's does not fit (the tube) - hard to see from the pic, but it's a micrometer too WIDE, and will not go all way in. (left is old, right is new - yes, I am sending it back)

Anybody ever encountered this?

I had a similar experience. A PO replaced the dipstick but not the tube and my dipstick fit but was inaccurate. A new tube was too large (diameter). The fix was a junkyard dipstick. Hope you can find one.

I replaced mine around 6 years ago as my
Dipstick was some makeshift adjustable one.
I purchased mine from Doug at Wilson's.
It seems fine. I started dealing with Doug

Thanks, Cliff - do you have the link for Wilson's?

I have bought several things for my car from Mac's, but it may be time to 'shop around' a little more?
(This is the first part from them, that is UNUSABLE)

Thamks, Cliff and 60fore! btw, after I called them to complain, I just noticed that mac's had credited me the ~$25 cost of the 'bad' dipstick (but NOT the shipping cost, which was another 50% of the purchase price)

That is because you shipped the wrong one, could not possibly be their fault.

No dount, tbird!

I found another one on the Wilson site (same price) but I am hesitant to spend another $40, to get the same thing?

Call Doug , talk to him. Tell him your concerns.
I work on cars for a living , having the right guy

Haven't had issue like you when it come to
Thunderbird. I purchased a sun visor clip from
Another thunderbird vendor because mine
Had pits in the chrome. What a mistake
That was.
