Quick tip-Removing A/C clutch

Post by ABQTBird »

If you try to remove the A/C clutch from the compressor, you run into the problem of the shaft being buried deep inside the clutch which prevents the puller from reaching it.

After looking around the garage a bit, I figured a small socket would work as a spacer, so I put a 3/8" short socket in the hole.

Attach a 6" wheel puller with the arms in the lower holes. A few cranks with a large wrench just suddenly popped the clutch off.

Now it is off to Classic Air for a rebuild.

Tom, isn't the clutch threaded to accept a push off bolt? It has been a while but I thought the last time I took one off I threaded a 5/8-11 or 3/4- 10 machine bolt into the clutch after removing the bolt and washer that holds it onto the shaft. about 1/2 a turn and it popped right off. Maybe not all clutches are made that way.

Yup, I was going to post a pic when I get back after the holiday. I call them jack screws
It's gonna be cool when it's done

Looks to me like the pulley in the picture has the internal thread, one of my pullers sets comes with jack bolts for this type pulley.

Yes, it is threaded. However, when it is New Year's eve at 7pm and you don't have a bolt that big, the socket works like a champ. Sometimes you have to work with what you have. I had a wheel puller but no bolt. Thus I improvised. I'm just trying to show what worked for me in a matter of five minutes.
