OBD II Scan Tool

Post by redstangbob »

I know this will have limited use on Thunderbirds, only cars 1996 and up can use this. I needed something affordable that would see MODE 6 data, and this is what I decided on, the ELM 327 cable. I went with the USB cable, you may want the blue tooth version, they are the same tool except for the connectivity. I'm told some units on ebay are knock-offs and can give you trouble, the original units are certainly affordable. The ELM 327 unit is only part of the system, you also need software. Some sellers bundle software with the unit, I'm using Scanmaster free software. If you like doing everything on your phone (no thanks), there are apps that use blue tooth and WiFi. Google is your friend here, look around and decide where to buy, here's a few links. good luck, Bob C

Something I've wondered about Bob - does the unit itself interpret the DTC # for you, or is that the function of the software/app?
Currently Birdless....we'll see how long that lasts!

The unit is just an interface, the software talks to the unit. here's another bit of software, made for Ford's, I'll try it later.

Thanks for sharing this Bob. I have two Autel scanners, one that reads ABS, but of course the graphs are much to be desired on the tiny screen. This looks pretty cool and cheaper too.
