A hot sunny day I left car outside with cover on.
Gas must have expanded and leaked thru gasket.
Serious bummer.

Re: FYI
It looks to me that this was festering for a while, I can't believe that just leaving out side with cover would cause this. Did you always top fill the tank? If you did this probably caused from the gas swishing back when you accelerate . Or there could be a crack in the rubber gasket between the neck of the filler tube .

Re: FYI
I put gas in the car the day before and i purposely don't fill all the way. When i removed the cap though the gas started flowing out. I had to siphon off some to lower the level. The gas must have expanded in the heat especially with the cover on the car. Very very surprising.
Re: FYI
Question, did you recently have your car painted ? If you had that also might explain what happened.... Next question does your cover breath ? What's the name of the mfg of the cover?

Re: FYI
Jere - do you get a WHOOOSH sound sometimes when you remove the gas cap? If so, the vent on the cap may be clogged and the tank is not "breathing"

Re: FYI
paint is around 15 yrs old. There has never been any whooshing sound from the cap or any indication that it is clogged. Im not sure of the manufacturer of the cap. I wonder if anyone has ever heard of this before - much less in New York state.
