Parts for a 65 thunderbird?

Post by chopper6771 »

I have just purchased a 65 thunderbird, won it on ebay, and know I need to get a new fuel tank, sending unit, and power brake booster. Any recomendations on suppliers. Do I stay original, or up grade. Thanks for the advice on hot rodding! I have been looking through the forums, and trying to gather as much advice as possible, and know the only stupid questions are the ones not asked. I am just getting into the "scene" and get get help with some of the wrench turning, but I want to do as much work as I can. I like the look of "yeti mans" car, and that is the look I'd like to shoot for. I do not want a rat rod. I want to get as much power out of the 390 as possible, and stay along the lines of a sleeper. Is there a super-charger for the 390? Anybody in Northern VA. Or local clubs?

Thanks!
Chris

If you go to the Forum tab on this site you'll see a link at the bottom of the list of part suppliers. There are lots but the ones listed there support the VTCI and this forum. I have not used all of these suppliers but the ones I have used have all be good to work with.

I would replace the fuel tank with a reproduction. As you can see, this tank pretty efficiently uses some underbody space. Same would be true for the sending unit.

Later, if you find the performance pieces you want, you may consider a fuel cell &/or electronic fuel pump.

Thanks for the information, I purchased my gas tank from him, and I got a fuel sending unit out of e-bay as well. Hopefully I actually saved money. I went to the ford fe forum, and the said I pretty much have a heavy car, so i'll stick to a cruiser. If you made any purchases from ebay, how did they go? I still have to buy a head liner, and power break booster. any recomendations? I've been getting catalogs from some parts "specialists" and I'm wondering if I would actually be saving money with ebay, or is it to much hit or miss?

Parts Purchasing

Post by Randy Mattson »

Just my opinion but I use the catalogs as a "guide" for pricing what I need, then using that guide for comparisons as I shop for whatever it is.
I feel much more confident purchasing from one of the suppliers listed here with the VTCI than I do buying something off the internet, such as
e-bay. Just another factor to consider.
Good Luck!

ebay has its place for finding parts, I buy things that I need from parted out cars (dash, skirts). For the headliner the major vendors have what you need. As for the booster, this guy is supposed to be good, and easy to deal with.
http://boosterdeweyexchange.com/ Do you have the low fuel light? The senders are different.

Any updates on this?
I was in the army stationed at Ft. Lewis in November 1973. I bought my 65 Thunderbird near there and was hooked on Thunderbirds ever since.

After 9 years, he might be ready for a second rebuild!
