my trans was rebuilt and has just a few thousand miles on it. What is the
most likely cause or causes for my clunking. Thanks, guys.
clunking when I shift into park, reverse, etc.

Possibly bad/loose universal joints? Those would clunk when shifting from neutral or park into drive or reverse.
If it's internal to the tranny, I defer to our colleagues with more experience!

I would pull the drive shaft and check all the U-joints and the splines at the trans end. After disconnecting it at the diff end, rotate the shaft back and forth in the trans and feel for any clunking. The splines are greased with a very heavy grease rather than lubricated by trans fluid like some auto tranny's. There's actually a seal at the end of the slip joint installed on the output shaft to keep fluid out. You can feel it when you slide the DS all the way in.
Also check for excess slop in the pumkin yoke.

There is a normal amount of 'clunk' when going in to gear, and there is an abnormal amount.

a harsh clunking sound is often just the engine idle set too high. your shop may have moved or bent something while removing the trans. JMO Bob C

Thanks guys, lots of good advice, and no way to keep my hands clean.
I'll post after I figure it out. But man, this great old car keeps me
broke, but just looking at my 65 makes my happy!

My wife likes to say that my old car habit is "cheaper than another woman". I don't have any experience with that but suspect that she's right...

I've gone through a phase lately where everything I touch on this old car seems to go south on me. I end up doing more work because of myself. (Like replacing the speedo gear and damaging the gear in the trans...)
I don't know about the cost but the frustration factor is probably about the same as having two women in your life
