Cruise Control

Post by CSPIDY »

I am looking for a Cruise Control Kit for my 57 that doesn’t use magnetic pickups and drive shaft for the speed input. I have found units that attach to the speedometer cable but they are for GM models.

Finnally decided to install a Universal Cruise Control with a GM style pulse generator. since there are no kits for our baby birds.
I selected the Dakota Digital CRS-2000.
I was able to have a new set of speedometer cables made up for pulse generator. SEN-01-1
I used a company in Colorado “Speedometers USA” to make a 60 inch cable with a GM end on it that goes from the speedometer to the output side of the pulse generator.
Then a 12 inch cable to go from the input side of the pulse generator to the tranny.
Manufactured a bracket and mount it to the underside of the tranny tunnel.
Speedometers USA also recalculated my speedometer gearing and supplied a new gear to correct the error.

I mounted the control module inside the cab on the firewall driver side just to the left of the steering column.
Although the instructions advised to not install it in the cab because of the noise from the actuator in the module.
There is, as most of you know, no room under the hood of our baby birds. So we’re gonna see on the test run and I’ll report back.
I manufactured a bracket for the cable at the throttle and added a Lokar LOK-S-1034 carb end adapter.
I drilled the existing throttle bracket to get a clean straight connection to the throttle.

I struggled with the control, I didn’t want to use their turn signal stlyle so I opted for the panel mounted switch assembly HND-2
I located it on the drivers side of the steering wheel.
I want to keep as much of the appearance of the car so cutting into the turned metal was difficult.
I would have preferred a wireless control that I could keep in the glove box, but they don’t offer any.
I added the optional LED engage light next to the switch assembly.
I also added the optional neutral safety switch and rev limiter.
I included a simple wire drawing I made up before all the details fade into old age.
The technical service at Dakota Digital were very helpful, they explained how all the features and controls worked so you get a good understanding and avoid problems. System worked first time, although I won’t be driving it for about a month because I’m doing a major touch up and I live in the north east.
