Transmission swap on 1956 Thunderbird.

Post by mustangman »

Can a borg warner t10 transmission from a 1966 mustang be installed in 1956 Thunderbird without any major modifications? I currently have a 1955 Crown Victoria with this transmission mated to the original 312 & it was installed with no modifications. I am in the process of purchasing a 1956 Thunderbird with 312 engine & 3-speed transmission & I would like to swap engine & transmission from 1955 Crown Vic to this car. Anyone have any knowledge on this subject?

The only modifications I can foresee is where the shifter comes up and you will have to fabricate a new rear mount. Otherwise it should not be problem. Keep in mind a new driveshaft may be necessary.

Keep in mind that you will have to switch the front mount, balancer and the water pump spacer from the TBird engine onto your sedan engine as these are Tbird specific. Maybe a few more stuff from the front of the engine and replace the sedan side mounts with the TBird steady rests

The 4 speed transmission I have in my Crown Victoria may be a 4 speed top loader transmission. Will there have to be any modifications using this transmission in the 56 Tbird other than modifying the shifter opening? Thanks for the reply on the borg warner t10 transmission swap.

If you are using a transmission (either the T-10 or a top loader) that is now now is behind a Yblock then you shouldn't have any other modifications. I am assuming that the usual modifications that go along with a top loader (and maybe to a T-10) to a YBlock belllhousing have already been done.

There are a number of rear housings that have different shifter mounting points. David Kee, a top loader expert, has all the info on this.
