Need a spare wheel, buy or trade

Post by gyoungwolf »

I am looking for a 14" wheel for my '62 for the spare tire. Doesn't have to be pretty, just cheap. I discovered that I have a 15" for the spare.
I will purchase or trade my 15" if anyone has and extra or similar dilemma.

Ha! I'm also looking for a spare for my '66 (being a 15") I do not have a 14" to trade you unfortunately. Don't suppose you are close to Charlotte, NC are you?

HI. I'm in Florida. I will be glad to sell you my 15" for whatever it costs me to buy a 14" one. It seems that folks are too proud of them, so I will probably hit a local junk yard soon. Would you be interested in the tire also (narrow white wall - looks new, but not sure how long it has been in the truck - at least 9 years, I think, as that is how long the car sat before I purchased it.

Ha! I saw a 14" on craigslist the other day. Now, to remember which city. Going to go look and I'll try to get the link to you...

Got it! (Kennesaw, GA. just north of Atlanta). Hope this helps! Still interested in your 15" wheel. Curious what the shipping would be to Richmond Hill GA.

That wheel that you have a link too is not a Thunderbird wheel.

Just sharing what the owner claimed in his ad. How can you tell it's not a T-bird wheel? Need some education, as I'm looking for a 15" rim for my '66 as well.

A Thunderbird wheel from 1958 through 1967 will have a solid center core welded to the outer rim, the metal is also thicker than the standard wheels these cars are heavy. this wheel that you are looking at is 5 " wide and in general is made for 195 or 205 radial tires the Thunderbird cross to a radial is a 215 / 75 / R15 or 14 and the rim is 5 ½" wide wether it is a 14 or 15".

Thanks Jim,
I'd look at mine, but the car is 2 states away currently (hoping to change that soon when I get my spare and carb. issues sorted). Yes, I see that link photo shows 4 slots where the center is welded to the rim (not solid, right?). I've had several folks locally tell me their rims fit Thunderbird, even though they are Ford 6" and even 7" wide (Crown Vic?). Maybe they do fit. Maybe OK for a spare. But heavier car... good point. Thank you too, guys for chiming in on rims that you have avail. Hope you see Jim's comments too, Grant.

Yes the center disc is spot welded to the outer rim, but I have seen some 64 rims that have rivets in place of the spot welds I have one of those in my inventory of wheels. Keep in mind that the 15" 64 rim is very similar to the 65-67 rim but the 64 will not fit over the Calipers.

May I ask. If you have a 15 wheel what size
Tire is on it and details. Is it a 65 or newer ?
Looks like you have a convertible. I am looking
For answers on how it fits & fits with top down.
Thinking of converting to disc brakes. I have a 63. Thanks Cliff
