I was lucky enough to obtain an NOS replacement gear shift lever and knob for my 77 Town Landau to replace my worn and pitted one.
It appears that the swap out should be as simple as:
1) Remove the retaining Pin
2) Pull out old lever
3) Push in new lever
4) Replace retaining pin
However, if past projects are any indication, things that seem to easy rarely are -)
So, here I am querying the group-mind about the best practices for replacing the gear shift lever on a 77 with tilt steering.
Thanks in advance.

The procedure to swap out the old lever and install the new unit is fairly straightforward. I know, you anticipate problems with any replacement procedure. But, sometimes it is as easy as it looks.
Let us know how it goes! All the best!

Just a follow up. I FINALLY got around to swapping out the arms. It was as simple as I thought.
Protip: get a second set of hands to put pressure INWARD (towards the column) when reinstalling. Makes it much easier.
