Re: Introduction to my 1965 Hardtop Thunderbird

I also used Dynomat to replace my insulation. It's easy to work with and does a nice job. I put down two layers. If your carpet is in good shape, I would absolutely recommend cleaning and reinstalling it. Replacements are generally lower quality and are not simple to install—they come oversized and ...

If there's rust inside the tank, time for a new one, methinks.

Re: Repro door panels

Yep, fiberglass will do the trick and is far superior to the cost (and difficulty) of reproduction panels. Both of my panels had water damage like you describe. My fiberglass skills are, well, not great, so I got C+ results. Better than what I started with, however. Some notes on the process I used:...

Re: upper ball joint removal issue

I don't often disagree with Paul, but if the method shown in his photos doesn't work (it did for me), I don't think it's a lot of extra effort to remove the arm and replace (the almost certainly worn out) bushing arm. I can't imagine any machine shop not being able to press this out, but you might a...

Re: 4.6 in a 64

Looks like they used the front cradle assembly from the donor car and mated it to the existing shock towers/frame. I was hoping to see the use of the whole frame brought over and adapted when I saw the omission of the upper strut bars. I have a 2004 Mercury Marquis that gets around okay, I wonder h...

Re: rear suspension mounting bolts

I'm replacing the rear springs and shock absorbers in my 1964 Thunderbird hardtop. This will include the upper mounting brackets, rear spring hangers & the front hangers. I want to have spare bolts lined up in case I damage the originals while removing them but can't seem to find anyone who can...

Re: Any experience on aftermarket water pumps?

My temp problem is different. Every Saturday it’s cars and coffee, so off we go on an 8 kilometre run to our meeting place. On the way the engine temp is 170-175. After sitting for roughly 2 hours drinking coffee and talking crap we head home and the engine temp is 140-150 same distance, no hills, ...

Re: ‘64 TBird

Attempt to bleed brakes failed. Master cylinder full, but no fluid at any wheels. How dependent is this on operational vacuum? The brake system only uses vacuum as an assist, so you should be able to bleed the brakes without the motor running just fine. You might have worn/non-existent seals in the...

Re: Just bought 1966 tbird for restore

So i opened my trunk to find a swimming pool inside, at least the new floor pans are water tight. Have previously repaired the trunk molding and rechecked, thats not the issue, to make a long story short, used mirror tool from inside the trunk to see that floor of rear vent chamber is rusted and al...

Welcome to the forum and congrats on the new car!

Love the color of your t-bird. Bodywork and paint is incredibly expensive, so a bird that looks nice and just has mechanical issues is a quality find.

Keep us posted on your progress!

Re: Got my engine in finally! And need help..

Found this old vs. new photo from when I did my mounts some years ago. Hard to tell exactly, but there's a pin on the mount to help orient it during assembly. The open side of the "C" shape should face to the rear, if memory serves. I would appear that if they were reversed, the engine wou...

I also don't believe it's possible to put the mounts in backwards. Thought I had a photo of the mounts handy, but it's not on this computer. I'll see if I can dig it up. Can you post a photo of the misaligned linkage?

Re: Any experience on aftermarket water pumps?

As the temperatures increase here in Las Vegas, my '65 cooling system is having trouble keeping the engine cool. There is no issue at idle, the temperature gauge remains steady at mid range. It is only when I'm at freeway speed does the gauge start to move up scale. Timing is correct (set by a vacu...

Re: amp gauge

With ref. to the tbird post of March 17, 2011 @ 11:24: My old and beaten up shop manual shows (on p. 13-2) the charging schematic routing the full current load through the ammeter - which is contrary to the info given in the reply that indicates a shunted meter was used in '66. Which is correct? (T...
