Re: FOM trans rough Park/N to Drive/Rev
For reference, Congress amended the Endangered Species Act in 1973 to outlaw the killing of sperm whales and the use of the oil. The major advantage of the oil was its extreme lubricity. When treated with sulfur it performed very well under extreme pressures such as in heavily loaded gear meshes. On...

Re: Troubleshooting a disconnected E-Brake cable
Here are a couple of "best guesses". The loose cable has slipped out of the groove in the pulley at the forward end of the parking brake handle assembly. The half round piece that seats in the equalizer bar under the car at the rear of the transmission fell out of position due to the extra...

Re: Air vent scoops/deflectors on a '57
I have seen the "not all fasteners installed" anomaly more than once on our '57. I agree with Jimntempe's statement. Assembly workers were expected to complete their work at a pace that allowed the line to continue to move forward. It was a pretty demanding pace and they had to do it for a...

Re: 56 Speedometer lubrication
I apologize for the confusing statement. The typical calibration was 1000 revolutions of the speedometer cable would equal 1 mile in distance and 1000 rpm would equal 60 mph.

Re: 56 Speedometer lubrication
There are actually 2 mechanisms within a speedometer. There is a mechanically driven gear train that operates the odometer. So every revolution of the cable moves the gear train regardless of speed. During the time period these cars were designed the typical calibration was that 1000 revolutions sho...

Re: It looks like the dash is coming out......
I have been very satisfied with the information in the Electrical manual for our ‘57. Some wiring diagrams are only show circuits and devices. That is all that the laminated one shows to me. The TBird manual shows location and relative position of the many devices and connectors. I used it to locate...

Re: It looks like the dash is coming out......
The driver’s air vent cable was frozen on our ‘57. I did remove it to get it operating smoothly. The only tricky part is getting the retainer loose on the under-dash side of the knob. I hung it vertically with the knob up and let it soak with rust penetrant for a few days. Then I flushed it with bra...

Re: Rust again in master cylinder
That color seems normal with age and use. That is why I flush any brake system at least once every 2 years.

Re: Worn out screw holes
There are lots of “tricks” to deal with stripped retaining holes in sheet metal and plastic parts. I have used J-clips, U-clips, RivNuts, and I cannot remember whatever else. A few times I even inserted a short piece of “safety” wire into a metal hole to make it act smaller for the sheet metal screw...

Re: trans leaking
You might want to do some searches on this forum. I seem to remember that there can be issues with the fluid in torque converter draining back into the transmission case if the car sits for an extended period. That increases the fluid level in the transmission. Sometimes the fluid will then leak whe...

Re: radiator recommendation
If your existing radiator is providing acceptable cooling I suggest that you get it cleaned by “tanking” it and then pressure tested. I do agree that will probably cost you between $200 and $300 at a competent radiator shop. The shop I use does include painting with radiator paint with a choice of g...

Re: List of all rubber brake hoses please
Sorry we got off track. I agree that new copper washers is the only real solution. That is my choice and why I always buy extra's.
