Re: Getting gas in the oil

I replaced the power valves, and pulled the fuel pump and verified the the diaphragm was good. I noticed when the car is running, the left jet inside the carburetor is dripping gas. Checked the primary bowl site screw for fuel level and no fuel was coming out. I tried to blow carb cleaner down the a...

Re: Getting gas in the oil

Hi Rusty, Thanks for the reply. The oil smells of gas and appears to be thinner. I pulled off the primary bowl and checked the power valve and found that the diaphragm was damaged, it will not hold a vacuum - so I ordered both power valves. Hope this solves the issue. For reference what should the c...

Getting gas in the oil

Hi, I have a 57 Tbird, 312 with the original Holly 1273 carburetor. I have an issue with gas getting in the oil so I put on a new Carter dual fuel pump. I also rebuilt the carburetor and checked the float levels, and made a little adjustment to the secondary. I thought that solved the issue but foun...

Re: Running rough then grinding when starting

I did replace the gas tank last spring. Kept the gas at 1/4 tank or less. Added Heet to the tank when it was running so rough. Used some carb cleaner, It is running smoother now but just have the backfire issue. I have had the car about 3 years and setting the timing was never an issue. No rebuilds ...

Re: Running rough then grinding when starting

Funny how life gets in the way of 'real' work. I finally had a chance to test the vacuum. it remained stable at idle and when accelerating. Timing also was stable. The car is mostly disassembled - hood, trunk, bumpers and doors have been removed so I cannot do any real driving, I ran the engine for ...

Re: Running rough then grinding when starting

I removed 3 plug wires, one at a time but never could hear any differences. I added Heet to the tank and emptied the fuel filter, got some ethanol free gas. The car is running much smoother. Now I get a back fire in the carburetor - popping sound. Last time I checked the timing was good. is this a v...

Re: Running rough then grinding when starting

One issue down. I removed the starter and had the Bendix spring replaced, the grinding sound is gone. Now what is causing it to run rough suddenly? I replaced the fuel filter, checked the points gap, checked the timing. I was planning to remove one plug wire at a time to see if one cylinder is the c...

Re: Running rough then grinding when starting

Thanks for the information. I will do some more investigation. I did pull the starter and verified it was not grinding, applied 12V and it spun smoothly. Note water behind the exhaust evaporated and did not appear to have any anti freeze in it. I will pull off the valve covers and manually crank the...

Running rough then grinding when starting

Need some help. I have been working on my '57 with a 312 for 2 years, I pull it in and out of the garage weekly - no problems. Recently I heard a 'clanking' noise (like metal hitting metal - no obvious mechanical signs) when trying to start the car. Once it started all was normal, the car started ve...

Re: 1957 - 312 engine - Voltage regulator?

I still am not getting any charge out of my generator after replacement of the regulator. I removed the generator and disassembled it. I did the shorts test on the chassis and armature per the shop manual (removed the case ground terminal, connected battery + to the case and measured from battery - ...

Re: 1957 - 312 engine - Voltage regulator?

Thanks for the information. I have a shop manual and electrical equipment installation manual. I will contact Jim Osborn about his manual. By the way is there any to fix a voltage regulator? I can see that the cutout relay does not activate. The generator tested good off the car. What goes wrong wit...

Re: 1957 - 312 engine - Voltage regulator?

What is the correct voltage regulator to install? I see there are 30, 35 and 40 Amp units. Standard Motor has VR35-30 amp, VR17- 35mp, VR21 40Amp or ACDELCO has F659 30Amp and F634 40Amp. Thanks
