I had the same problem when updating mine and found life was a lot easier when I carefully filed off the small stopper ring on the shaft. That allowed the rubber bushing to easily slide down and leave the necessary threads exposed.

Alan's advice about Dr. Vinyl or equivalent is right on, mine was equal or worse than that and they repaired it back to where most people don't realize it's not factory. They can color and grain match I was very pleased with the job on mine.

Also 3M spray adhesive, been in place for over two years and 16K miles.
