replacing Tbird logo on back center

Post by rrbnut »

my old Tbird logo is quite fainted and scraped;like to replace it but do not see any easy way or access to it;this is the center logo plate between the rear lights.
Does it simply pop out? Any help is appreciated.

If I'm not mistaken, you need to remove the bumper to get that part out   . I might have some pictures, I'll look.
It's gonna be cool when it's done
And now it's really cool !!

Yep, to do the bumper center emblem the bumper assy. must come out. The center housing is held by 4 bolts, remove one of the taillights and you should be able to slide the housing out. Remove the bracket from the housing and swap out the emblem. There should be a strip of rubber in-between the emblem and the bracket. Make sure it goes back.

Sorry to say, but the rear bumper assembly needs to come off the car. It could be agrued that it can be done with bumper intact but only a double jointed small person might be able to do it. A converible is easier done than a hard top car intact but still difficult. You will need to remove the tail lite assemblies then the rear bumper main body and chrome assembly. After removal then you will remove the centre chrome module. Then at which time you will need to remove the centre insert retainer 4 screws and pull out the resin bird logo. As noted above there is a rubber pad between the logo and the retainer, this acts as a cushion and needs reinstallation on the new logo to take up any free play. Then just reverse the disassembly and you are ready to go. It is not difficult just takes a little time. In the process you will see were road grime can collect and will want to possibly clean and protect the cars tail feathers, and get a look at the rear spring shackles to boot. Have fun.

I did mine without removing the bumper.
I used a long ratchet wrench with pivoting head, got it at Sears.
Wasn't easy though..fwiw

I have done several of these replacements with the bumper still attached to the bird.

Actually fairly easy if you a bit patient.

Find a swiveling 7/16 or 3/8 ratchet wrench for the best access. If you can put your hand up behind the bumper you can feel the 4 bolts then shine a light so you know where they are located. You will need to remove all 4 at about the same time as the clearance is a bit tight. Take your time and the center piece will come off. Please note which side is up on the plate and center bumper piece as it is at a slight angle. Installing it upside down results in removing it again. Been there done that.

If your hands are too big to get up in there the wife or one of the daughters that have small hands can be recruited. They may yelp but mine enjoyed helping.

Install is the reverse and this is where the small hands helped a lot. Be aware that if the bumper has been hit it will be closer to the rear valence giving one not much space to get hands up there. If all else fails the 4 or 6 bolts holding the rear bumper in place can be loosened but not removed giving one some additional space.

Good Luck
